An expansion joint in building construction is an element connecting separate sections of a structure that allow for free movement between sections. Expansion joints create tolerance for expansion and contraction of building materials brought about by environmental events such as temperature changes, sway caused by wind, and seismic activity. I remember first learning about their specific functionality and being struck by their ubiquitous nature (we encounter them so often that they are easily overlooked). I also couldn’t shake the thought of them as a metaphor for relational flexibility in my own life. These images on fabric specifically depict bridge expansion joints.
